Declaring Independance |
The Colonists send representatives to Philadelphia to write up a document that told Britain that they were no longer under their control and they United States of America was forming a new country.
Key ideas of the Declaration of Independance are: 1. "All men are created equal. . ." -- This means nobody is better than anyone else. 2. "...they are endowed by their creator with certaininalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." -- This means you are born with certain rights no one can take away from you like life, freedom, and happiness. 3. "to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed" -- This means the government protects these rights. 4. "whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it" -- This means when the government gets in the way of these rights, you have the right to fight for them. |
Battle of Saratoga
|
The British wanted to capture Albany, New York, and continue south on the
Hudson River. By controlling Lake Champlain and the Hudson River, the British would cut the United States in two. The British predicted that if they could do this, this would end the American Revolution. The British suffered heavy loss and were running out of food. On the other hand, the colonists were getting stronger and more people were coming to help. The colonists ended up winning this battle when the British finally surrendered. This showed the world that the colonies were strong and that they were strong enough to beat the strong British army. This convinced France to help the colonies. This was considered the Turning point of the war. |
